Abraham Lincoln family
Abraham Lincoln had regular episodes of
melancholy and Mary Todd Lincoln had a series of nervous fits
and breakdowns. Mary Todd Lincoln occasionally had
tantrums of jealousy and temper that embarrassed Abraham
Lincoln in public, and Mary Todd Lincoln spent their
money so lavishly that Abraham Lincoln was often driven into
debt.
Unhappy First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln
Mary Todd Lincoln was an unhappy First Lady.
Her brothers were serving in the Confederate army
while Abraham Lincoln was commanding the Union, and
as a result Mary Todd Lincoln was considered a traitor by some
of the public and press. Mary Todd Lincoln also grew
desperately lonely when Abraham Lincoln was forced to travel.
After the death of one of their children, and after Mary Todd
Lincoln witnessed Abraham Lincoln 's assassination, Mary Todd
Lincoln went insane and was admitted to a mental
institution.
The children of the Lincolns
The Lincolns had four children, all boys, but
only one, Robert Lincoln, lived to adulthood. Edward Lincoln
died at age four, years before Lincoln became president; Willie
Lincoln died in the White House at age eleven, and Tad
Lincoln died at age 18, a few years after Abraham Lincoln
was killed.
