Abraham Lincoln family
Mary Todd Lincoln - wife of Abraham
Lincoln
While living in Springfield Abraham Lincoln
began courting Mary Todd (soon to be Mary Todd Lincoln), a
Kentucky woman to whom Abraham Lincoln soon proposed. The
relationship of Abraham Lincoln and Mary
Todd (Lincoln) was a turbulent relationship from the
start. Mary Todd (Lincoln) was high strung and socially
ambitious. Abraham Lincoln was introspective and given to
moods.
The breakup of Abraham Lincoln and Mary
Todd (Lincoln)
Abraham Lincoln broke off the engagement
with Mary Todd (Lincoln) at one point, sure they wouldn't be
able to make each other happy. But Abraham
Lincoln was so depressed after this breaking off of
engagement to Mary Todd (Lincoln), an event Abraham
Lincoln always referred to as "that fatal first of
January," that Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd (Lincoln)
reconciled soon after.
The marriage of Abraham Lincoln to Mary Todd
(Lincoln)
Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln
finally married in 1842, when Abraham Lincoln was 33 and Mary
Todd (Lincoln) was 23. It was a loving marriage and a devoted
one, in spite of persistent troubles and challenges that
increased dramatically during the White House years.
